New Delhi, Apr 15: The direct tax collection data shown by India in Pixels is truly staggering. The data is collected from Incometaxindia.gov.in The data shows that the total direct tax collection in India is 14,12,422.45.
The jaw-dropping numbers come from Maharashtra which contributes more than 1/3rd in the direct tax, which is 5,24,497.65. This means Maharashtra not only contributes more than all the north and east Indian states (which are poorer states in India), but even with the most prosperous states of India that are southern states, Maharashtra contributes more than all the southern states combined. In fact, Maharashtra’s total direct tax contribution is more than the combined contribution by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Gujarat, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
The second biggest contributor is Delhi with 1,77,824.22, and Karnataka is the third at 1,68,678.09. With such huge disparities even between the more developed southern states and Maharashtra, the gap between the richest state in India, ie. Maharashtra (by GSDP) and the poorest state Bihar will only increase in the short to medium-term future.
